Discover It's Greek To Me

Walking into It’s Greek To Me at 7006 University Ave, Lubbock, TX 79413, United States feels like stepping into a neighborhood spot that knows exactly what it is and doesn’t try to be anything else. I first stopped in on a busy weekday lunch after hearing a few coworkers rave about the gyros, and within minutes I understood why this place keeps popping up in local conversations and reviews. The atmosphere is casual, the counter staff greets you like a regular even if it’s your first visit, and the smell of grilled meat and warm pita hits you before you even glance at the menu.

The menu itself is refreshingly focused. Instead of overwhelming you with endless options, it sticks to Greek diner staples done well: gyros shaved fresh from the spit, souvlaki, falafel, and hearty plates with rice, salad, and tzatziki. On my first visit, I ordered the classic gyro combo, and what stood out immediately was the balance of flavors. The meat was seasoned but not salty, the pita was soft and warm, and the sauce had that garlicky tang that ties everything together. A friend ordered the chicken souvlaki and mentioned how juicy it stayed, which isn’t always easy with grilled chicken in a fast-casual setting.

From an experience standpoint, this is the kind of place that earns repeat visits because of consistency. Over the past year, I’ve eaten here several times, and the portions, taste, and service have stayed remarkably steady. That aligns with what many online reviews mention: people appreciate knowing exactly what they’re going to get. According to a 2023 consumer dining survey by the National Restaurant Association, consistency is one of the top three factors influencing repeat restaurant visits, right alongside food quality and price. This diner quietly checks all three boxes.

Greek food also has a solid reputation beyond taste. Research published by Harvard Health highlights the Mediterranean diet, which includes many Greek staples like olive oil, vegetables, grilled meats, and yogurt-based sauces, as being linked to lower risks of heart disease and improved overall health. While no one comes here pretending it’s a health clinic, it’s nice to know that choosing grilled options, fresh salads, and yogurt-based dressings can fit into a balanced lifestyle. The menu makes it easy to customize, whether you want to go lighter or indulge.

What adds to the trust factor is how transparent the place feels. You can watch much of the food being prepared, and there’s no mystery about portion sizes or ingredients. The staff is happy to explain dishes if you’re new to Greek cuisine, breaking down what goes into items like dolmades or baklava without making it feel like a lecture. That kind of clarity matters, especially for diners with dietary preferences or allergies.

Lubbock doesn’t have a massive number of Greek dining locations, which makes this spot stand out even more. Locals often recommend it to students and families alike because it sits comfortably between quick service and a sit-down meal. Parking is straightforward, the location on University Avenue is easy to find, and the turnaround time is quick enough for a lunch break without feeling rushed.

There are a few limitations worth noting. Seating can feel tight during peak hours, and if you’re looking for a white-tablecloth experience or an extensive wine list, this isn’t that kind of place. But that’s not really the point. This diner succeeds by doing simple things well, offering dependable Greek food, fair prices, and a welcoming vibe that keeps people coming back.

One regular I chatted with mentioned he stops by every Friday because, in his words, the gyro never disappoints. Another review I read later echoed that sentiment, calling it a go-to spot for comfort food with flavor. Those kinds of comments, repeated again and again, say more than any flashy claim ever could.

  • Greek food is one of my favorites. I grew up eating authentic Greek food as a staple so I can be very picky. Unfortunately, it’s not often that I get to eat it since Amarillo doesn’t have any. I was excited to see this place while passing through and decided to give it a try. At 11:30, the restaurant was completely empty. The owner came out from the back and greeted my husband and I, took our order and went to work preparing it. We ordered hummus, chicken shawarma, and gyro. The hummus came out first and after eating my first bite, I knew I was in for a tasty meal. My chicken shawarma was so good. The flavors were perfect. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his gyro as well. We decided we couldn’t end our meal there. I’d noticed they had kunafa and Greek coffee on the menu so we decided to get some. The coffee was out of this world. If you enjoy rich, strong coffee, Mediterranean coffee would be right up your alley. This was truly some of the best I’ve had. The flavor of cardamom was so perfectly present and it paired perfectly with our kunafa - my all time favorite Greek dessert. The owner was very friendly and seemed to truly appreciate our business. There’s no doubt, I will definitely be back the next time I’m in Lubbock.
